Plenty of people have written recently on the death
of the great US historian
Howard Zinn. Alternative media outlets like Counterpunch, ZNet and
Dissident Voice published several articles in Zinn's honour which might
lead a casual visitor to those web sites to think they shared Zinn's
commitment to open debate and factual analysis. They would be wrong. On
Nicaragua, those flagship web sites for the North American radical
and progressive movements have spread falsehoods and suppressed debate.

On January
28th, a group of seven deputies belonging to former president Arnoldo
Aleman's PLC and former presidential candidate Eduardo Montelalegre's
MVE presented a bill to Nicaragua's National Assembly proposing an
amnesty for over
1,500
former public officials who are accused of committing crimes
including
(but not exclusively) the theft of over C$18 billion (roughly
US$900 million) from the Nicaraguan State between March 1990 and
January 2007. Karla Jacobs reports.

"Este trabajo tiene sus riesgos, pero hay que hacerlo porque los
grandes
medios de comunicación no se encuentran en las marchas de la
Resistencia. No se encontraron ningunos medios grandes cubriendo la
situación en una colonia pobre donde hubo toque de queda durante
38 horas y donde el ejército y la policía entraron
disparando en forma indiscriminada a la población civil
desarmada, matando e hiriendo mucha gente. Entonces a los comunicadores
sociales que realmente defendemos los
principios, la ética de un periodismo objetivo, ahí nos
toca estar. "

The US government
and its international and regional allies view real
autonomy and independence for Caribbean nations and for Central and
South American countries as a threat. The US government response has
been to militarize Latin America and the Caribbean with new bases,
principally in Panama and Colombia. Now, President Obama's
administration has exploited the catastrophe in Haiti to militarize
that country under the pretext of providing security for humanitarian
relief operations. Governments in the region see straight through that
pretext to the menace behind it. toni solo reports.

On January 14th
Daniel
Ortega's government officially launched the new
Social Housing Program which will be carried out in collaboration with
Nicaragua's private sector. The project is the result of over six
months of talks between relevant public institutions, representatives
of Nicaragua's private banks and the construction and urban development
sectors.
According to Presidential Economic Adviser, Bayardo Arce, the Social
Housing Program goes a long way towards tackling the financial, legal
and administrative obstacles which have for years prevented a
significant dent being made in the country's shockingly high housing
deficit. Karla Jacobs reports.
