Alexis Argüello on the electoral campaign trail in Managua in 2008

Alexis Argüello, the legendary Nicaraguan boxing world champion who has served as Mayor of Managua since his electoral triumph in November 2008, tragically died this morning. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but by all accounts Argüello, who has struggled with depression most of his life, committed suicide. In honour of one of Nicaragua's most loved personalities, Tortilla con Sal has put together this short obituary.

Markets reacted favourably in early trading on Thursday April 1st 2010, to President Obama's announcement Wednesday that the United States may seek to join the ALBA trade framework led by Cuba and Venezuela. The Dow-Jones industrial index rose over 200 points, with energy and mining stocks benefiting most. Unofficial sources acknowledged that the controversial move stems from the Obama administration's wider radical policy review mooted earlier this year in the President's State of the Union address. toni solo reports.

Incredulity, outrage, impotence – admiration for Manuel Zelaya, Patricia Rodas, Carlos Enrique Reina, Luther Harry every single one of the Ministers and functionaries of the legitimate government. As Hugo Chavez put it so well, the emotions boil and surge through one's blood and nerves. Total rejection of the usurper regime. Chavez called them “gorilettis”, Rafael Correa calls them “pinochettis” after the usurping dictator in Honduras, Micheletti, and the defunct Chilean tyrant Augusto Pinochet. toni solo was in Tegucigalpa to observe the consultative vote aborted by the coup d'état.
