Our Compañero Giustino Di Celmo Has Died in Havana.

Giustino always touched people especially in September, the month that marked another anniversary of the murder of his son, Fabio Di Celmo, who died on September 4, 1997. The bomb that killed Fabio was sent by the admitted terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, who continues to enjoy total impunity in the United States to this day.

That unfortunate day when the bomb exploded in the lobby of the Copacabana hotel Fabio was sitting there along with a couple who were Italian friends enjoying their honeymoon. Giustino was also there in his hotel room when he heard the explosion and ran down the stairs thinking that the blast had happened in the kitchen. But there amongst a cloud of dust and damaged materials he found the workers of the hotel lifting the bloodied body of his son Fabio out of the rubble. Giustino told us that at that moment he felt like his life was also being taken away along with that of his youngest son.

It was from then on that he swore to devote the rest of his life to denounce this crime that had been committed not just against Fabio but against the Cuban Revolution itself.

Giustino joined our International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 in the beginning, participating in meetings, traveling to Holguin to take part in the Colloquiums and all activities that he could possibly make. Neither his advanced age nor his health problems stopped him for being present when he was called.

Every September 4, along with the workers of the hotel, ICAP, the historian Acela Caner author of the book "Fabio the Boy of Copacabana", the mothers and wives of the Cuban Five, the families of the victims of the Barbados airliner crime, came together with Giustino to honor the memory of Fabio. It was an anniversary to not just mourn but to denounce once again terrorism and to demand jail for Posada Carriles.

The lively eyes of Giustino would transform into infinite sadness when he talked about Fabio. He said that he had no more tears.

Today for all of us who had the honor to know him we all have tears but we also take with us his example of transforming pain into struggle. From the pain that overwhelms us at this moment we promise to Giustino to continue honoring the memory of Fabio and to never for one second stop fighting against terrorism and for peace and justice.
