COMMENTS FROM NICARAGUA
IN DEBATE ON CULTURE OF PEACE

Mr. President,
1. Nicaragua appreciates the convening of this meeting on Culture of Peace and we associate ourselves with the speech delivered by the delegation of Venezuela, on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations.
2. We also express our appreciation and gratitude to the delegation of Bangladesh for its leadership in the presentation of the resolution: Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. Nicaragua is pleased to co-sponsor the resolution.
Mr. President,
3. The International Community as a whole must continue to contribute to the progressive disappearance of unipolar hegemonism, strengthening multipolarity in a Just, Equitable World, with Peace, Security, Stability, Development and Progress for Humanity and for all the Peoples of the World.
4. The Culture of Peace requires respect for the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and International Law, sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs of States, non-discrimination, sovereign equality and self-determination and independence.
5. It is also based on universal values such as Development, Equity, Social Justice, Democracy and Freedom; always prioritizing negotiation, harmony and mutually beneficial cooperation, demanding an end to conflicts, aggression and illegal unilateral coercive measures imposed on our peoples.
6. Nicaragua urges a greater global commitment, a true multilateralism, that promotes cooperation and joint efforts to face all current challenges, including those that have their origin in social, economic and environmental inequalities within and between countries.

7. The Culture of Peace is now, and more than ever, necessary in our world.
8. In the last 7 months we have witnessed growing ideological and cultural perversion; imperialist, unipolar, exclusionary and racist thinking accompanied by an irrational deployment of military force to try to impose their neocolonial will.
9. Nicaragua reiterates its strong condemnation of the cruelty, hatred and genocide of the Government of Israel against the Heroic Palestinian People in Gaza, the West Bank and all the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
10. We reaffirm our full solidarity with the Palestinian People and demand immediate respect for a ceasefire, as well as the protection of the population in Palestine, without double standards and in equal conditions as human beings, valuing lives in the same way for all.
11. It is urgent that the United States put an end to its policy of exclusion and obstruction in the Security Council and accept the application of the State of Palestine as a Full Member of the United Nations. Also, given the current circumstances, the holding of the International Conference to end the occupation of all Palestinian, Arab territories occupied by Israel is a priority. The realization of these two initiatives is a vital step for peace in the Middle East.

12. Nicaragua takes up this opportunity to express that the Culture of Peace means respecting International Law, recalling that the judgments of the International Court of Justice, the highest judicial organ of the United Nations, on the case of Nicaragua and the United States, are final and of inescapable compliance, therefore, the United States has the legal obligation to comply with the reparations issued by the International Court of Justice.

13. On the initiative of our Government of Reconciliation and National Unity, the National Assembly of Nicaragua unanimously approved the Law Declaring April the Month of Peace. Peace is a historical legacy that we must celebrate with respect, concord and fraternity for prosperity.
14. This Law obeys the Nicaraguan people's vocation for peace and the legacy that our Heroes and Martyrs have left us in the history of struggle for Sovereignty, Self-determination and Independence of our Blessed and Forever Free Nicaragua.
15. Nicaragua, in its Culture of Peace with the International Community, continues to defend Multilateralism, building relations based on respect, equality, solidarity and mutual cooperation, respecting and fulfilling the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, among which are respect for international law and non-interference in internal affairs.
16. We will continue to firmly defend Peace and we will continue to implement our Model of Christian, Socialist and Solidarity based Development, for the well-being of our Families and Communities.
17. For this reason, we demand the elimination of all the so-called sanctions, unilateral coercive measures, of all this aggression, and we demand the right of all peoples to decide their future without interference of any kind.
18. In Nicaragua we live Peace as a way, as a path of Light and we protect it as our fundamental Patrimony. We protect and defend it in our Blessed Nation, Forever Sovereign and Dignified.
