Ceremony for the inauguration of General Julio César Avilés Castillo as Head of the Armed Forces of the Army of Nicaragua
February 21st 2025
Address by Daniel
Brothers and sisters of Nicaragua; Brothers and Sisters, Compañer@s; Families of those who make up the Nicaraguan Army, for all of you, our Affection, our Respect and our Recognition of the work developed since its foundation.
We well know that the Army came out of the heart of the Revolution and was formed precisely there, and the battles continued precisely there, when, endangering Peace, the rulers in the United States of North America of that time decided to establish a Counterrevolutionary Army, and defended that Counterrevolutionary Army, not just President Ronald Reagan but also those from other countries who joined the conspiracy, because they wanted to destroy, extinguish the flame of the Revolution.
That meant ten years of combat, ten years fought then by the Sandinista People's Army, today the Army of Nicaragua. Many of you, like General Avilés, were in the Revolutionary Struggle against the Somoza Dictatorship and then you found yourselves confronting the counterrevolutionary war.
Over ten years, they could not defeat our People's Army, an Army that inherited the Ideals of our General of Free Men and Women, Augusto Nicolás Calderón Sandino.
On this day, in this event in which General Avilés is assuming command as Commander-in-Chief of the Army, with a long accumulated experience, it is exactly the day on which we pay tribute throughout Nicaragua to General Sandino, on the 91st Anniversary of his assassination. Murdered in the most cowardly way.
He wanted Peace, he wanted a Dignified People, a Sovereign People, which is why he stood firm with a handful of Patriots, 29, 30 along with him, to confront the Yankee intervention, the US troops who landed in Nicaragua, trying to dominate Nicaragua; trying to recover the control they had maintained in Nicaragua in previous times; trying to extinguish the flame of the Liberal Revolution of 1897; trying to extinguish the flame of the first Battle that was waged in Nicaragua against Yankee expansionism.
In the years 1854, 55, 56, in those years the filibusters arrived, the Yankee expansionists arrived, and they took power in Nicaragua, and imposed a President here. We cannot forget that they imposed a President of extremist origin, of extremist roots, of those who promoted slavery and the Ku Klux Klán there in the United States: William Walker, yes, was made President of Nicaragua, but even then the People rose up, in those years, against the invaders.
And when William Walker took over as President, there was the Yankee Ambassador sanctifying barbarism, because William Walker, the first thing he did in Nicaragua was to decree slavery, slavery that had already been abolished since the Independence of Central America in 1821. Walker came and re-established slavery.
But this People, the People in whose veins runs the rebel blood of Nicarao and Diriangén, the Caciques who faced up to and fought those who invaded our lands with the cross and the sword, there alone, with no significant international support, this people fought the battle, with General José Dolores Estrada at the forefront of the fighting.
And with that Heroic Feat, one which we always pay tribute to, of that Hero who fought back in San Jacinto when the invading troops were rushing over his trench, Sergeant Andrés Castro, a Nicaraguan peasant, did not have a repeating rifle and therefore had no rifle loaded, what did he do? He took a stone and threw it at the Yankee, and right there he knocked him down.
Meanwhile, the Indigenous Fighters of Matagalpa were joining the battle, the ones who traveled from Matagalpa to this area, to fight the invaders. It was a Battle of the People, the First Heroic Battle of Independent Nicaragua.
In the end, a Yankee Colonel who accompanied Walker, Byron Cole, also fell there in San Jacinto, and they were defeated in that emblematic Battle, which is in the Heart of the People, which is in the Heart of our Youth and in the Heart of our Children. Even in the times of Somocismo they could not eradicate Patriotism, they could not erase the Battle of San Jacinto and September 14th became a Historical Date, September 14th of the 1850s.
And then what was disputed in Nicaragua... What the Yankees were disputing, why after all was Nicaragua of such importance? The passage from one Ocean to another Ocean which was disputed by the conquistadors and where the United States had of course already appropriated the passage, because there was a natural passage here in Nicaragua, the San Juan River, the Great Lake, then precisely there it was traveled so as to reach the shores of the Pacific.
Thousands of North Americans traveled through Nicaragua, because what an American businessman, owner of maritime companies, did was to organize a route when the Gold Rush came to the United States, where the North Americans were going crazy so as to come from the East Coast to the West Coast, for which they had to cross that immense territory and in doing so running great danger of death or of assault.
So, well, the North American company organized that route and the North Americans embarked in New York, they arrived from New York to the entrance of the San Juan River, where the San Juan River empties into the Caribbean Sea, and from there they moved along the River to the Lake, and from the Lake to the shores of the Pacific, and there they took another larger ship, for that ship to take them to the West Coast of the United States.
That explains why the United States has had its sights set on Nicaragua: The Canal. Even then, they imposed a law here on an illegitimate government, so that the territory could not be touched, the Nicaraguan Government could not touch an inch of its land to take steps for a Canal, much less do so in agreement with other countries, because at that time the great rivals the US had there were the Europeans, and the Europeans, the British, the French also wanted to take control of the Canal.
But there was the First Great Heroic Battle of the Nicaraguan People, and there the first Anti-Imperialist Anthems arose, where the fighters of San Jacinto shouted: Death to the Yankee thirsty for Gold! Death to the vile and cowardly invader! That's what they said, with that same strength, with that same firmness.
And it was not really an Army, it did not become an Army like the one that our General Sandino later organized; it was a very small armed force reinforced by the Indian archers from Matagalpa, and composed of peasants, peasants who wore sandals, peasants who were simply fighting for their roots, for their identity, for sovereignty.
In the end, Walker had to flee Nicaragua, but in the retreat he set fire to the City of Granada, that is, out of sheer evil, he left the City of Granada on fire, and ships arrived from the United States to rescue him and take him there where he was received as a hero by the Government of that time.
Nicaragua's First Great Heroic Battle! And I would say that there, in that new stage of Independent Life, a Conscience and a very small Army were forged, defending Freedom, defending Sovereignty, in the face of a Yankee occupation that had already decreed slavery in Nicaragua.
The First Great Battle! Then, the Second Great Battle, always over the Canal, as I was explaining to you, the Liberal Revolution led by Zelaya, which came to totally remove the dictatorship that existed here, the tyranny that existed here, of the oligarchies allied with the Priests, with the Vatican, with the Bishops, imposing the Catholic Religion, imposing it. That was broken up by Zelaya for Zelaya decreed Secular Education in Nicaragua.
And he also began to promote projects that were not to the liking of the US ruling classes. And when Zelaya started discussing the Canal with European countries, then the coup against Zelaya promptly came, in the form of the infamous Knox Note that the United States Secretary of State sent to President Zelaya, telling him that he had just hours to leave the Government and that US warships were already coming for Nicaragua. And Zelaya didn't want to fight, so he decided to leave.
But a Patriot, another Patriot, a Worthy Son of the Heroes of San Jacinto, a Worthy Son of Nicarao, of Diriangén, of Adiact, General Benjamin Zeledón, took up arms against the invaders.
And it was really a matter of honor, because there were no conditions, from the military point of view, given the strategy, the tactics that General Zeledón used at that time, there were no conditions for him to defeat the Yankee troops. Of course, if he had assumed the guerrilla tactics of General Sandino, he would have driven them out of their minds there; but he set up defenses in Coyotepe, and there he waited for them and there he gave battle with them, and since they couldn't defeat him, the top commanders of the Yankee Army, some Colonels, went to negotiate with General Benjamin Zeledón, and they went to tell him that they were going to spare his life.
General Zeledón left a historic Letter that says great deal about what Patriotism is, about what Love of one’s Country is, in which he clearly told them... And a letter too that he addressed to his wife, helping her understand why he had no alternative but death, that, for him, it was a matter of Principle, of Dignity.
Then he fell in an attack and the corpse of General Zeledón was paraded through the streets of the local villages so as to terrorize Nicaraguan families. We are talking about the year 1912, on October 4th, when General Zeledón gave his Life for Freedom; and October 4th, his birthday, was the day he fell in combat and passed into Immortality.
And a boy from Niquinohomo who was there watching how they were parading back and forth with Zeledón's corpse, that boy was indignant and right there his Heart said to him: This cannot be! The boy was Augusto Nicolás Calderón Sandino.
A boy there watching and then later organizing, in the midst of fighting, a thousand combats, a thousand battles, when the Forces that he had supported to remove the traitors out of the Government surrendered, he did not surrender, but instead, among the troops he had been commanding, he asked for volunteers to continue the battle. Because other commanders, led by a traitor, had already signed the famous Pact, the Pact of Espino Negro had already been signed, by which they promised to lay down their weapons and that the Yankees were going to give them something like a dollar for every rifle they handed over.
And when Sandino gathered together the Comrades who were with him in the fight and explained to them that he was going to continue fighting the traitors and the Yankees, how many were willing to give the battle? 29 raised their hands, and with him that made 30. And there the Army In Defense of National Sovereignty was organized.
That is to say, Sandino is really, in Nicaragua’s history, the one who, thanks to his knowledge, his wisdom, his courage, managed to structure and organize an Army with the appropriate tactics to be able to confront the Yankee occupation.
It was a long battle that General Sandino fought. He was not, in any way, struggling and fighting blindly, for he had the ability to elaborate his thought, to work out ideas, so as to understand what was going on and why they had to fight.
And he, from the mountain, wrote down what he thought, the Essence of his Thought, Patriotic, Revolutionary, which transcends Humanity itself; transcends these Times when wars have multiplied; transcends these Times when there is even talk that we are on the verge of a global catastrophe, because there are atomic weapons.
And the Imperialists of the Earth, especially in this case, those of the European Union, arr readily explicable. Why? Because the first colonialists came out of the European Union, the first ones who promoted slavery, and they fought among themselves looking for how to take over Africa, how to take over Asia, how to take over these lands here. They had wars between themselves continuously, and at the same time they were occupying territories of which Africa has been one of the territories that has suffered most.
That's where they invented, they, who are supposed to be the most democratic, the most humanistic, decided that the inhabitants of Africa were perfect to turn into slaves. And for them slavery simply became a business, they trapped in their Colonies there in Africa the inhabitants of villages and whole Peoples; the father, the mother, the children were put in dungeons, chained, and there they waited for the buyers of slaves who arrived from Europe to arrive.
Then, the European merchants took the slaves to European territory and there the dealing began, how much the slavers wanted to pay for Men, Women, Children.
Then they shipped the slaves also to these countries of the Americas, to these lands, and the slaves multiplied there in the United States of North America.
They also brought slaves here, in that case the Spaniards brought slaves, since they had control of the indigenous populations under the Principle of Encomiendas. The Kings arranged to whom they would hand over these Peoples, and those persons came with that Right, and of course with the Cross and the Sword, to exploit our indigenous ancestors. Slavery lasted many years and caused many hundreds of thousands of deaths.
So then, faced with all these antecedents, the genius of General Sandino his thought, someone who had not had an education in universities, but who had great Wisdom, which only God gives, only Christ gives.
And I am going to refer here to what is the Thought of our General Sandino, which is like a premonition. He called it "Light and Truth”" and he begins by saying:
"I make clear to the Members our Army In Defense of National Sovereignty here in Nicaragua.
Divine impulse is what animates and protects our Army, from its beginning and so it will be until the end.
That same impulse asks in Justice that all our Brother and Sister Members of this Army, begin to know in all their Light and Truth the laws that govern the Universe.”
And he goes on there explaining, when he says that the impulse of the struggle, seeks in Justice that we all see each other as Brothers and Sisters, and that injustice has no reason to exist in the Universe, and its birth was from envy and antagonism of men and women, before they had understood its Spirit.
"But the misunderstanding of men and women is only a transitory moment of Universal Life, and when the majority of humanity knows that it lives by the Spirit…" Pay attention to this because, he speaks of the Power of the Spirit, which is the Moral Force, of conscience “ ...injustice will end forever and only Divine Justice will be able to reign: the only daughter of Love.
Many times you will have heard about a Final Judgment of the World.
By the Final Judgment of the World must be understood the destruction of injustice on Earth for the Spirit of Light and Truth to reign, namely, Love.
You have also heard it said that this Twentieth Century, that is to say, the Century of Enlightenment, is the time when the Final Judgment of the World was prophesied.
Well, Brothers:
The Century in question consists of one hundred years and we are already in the thirty-first; which means that this announced catastrophe should be defined in these last 69 years that are missing.
It is not true that St. Vincent has to come to blow a trumpet, nor is it true that the Earth is going to explode for it then to sink; no.
What will happen is the following:
The oppressed peoples will break their chains", pay close attention here, "the chains of humiliation, in which the Imperialists of the Earth have wanted to keep us”. Look at the clarity of Sandino.
The trumpets that will be heard will be the bugles of war, singing the anthems of freedom for the oppressed peoples against the injustice of the oppressors.
The only thing that will be sunk forever is Injustice; and then there will remain the Kingdom of Perfection, Love; with its favorite daughter, Divine Justice.
We are honored, Brothers and Sisters, that we have been chosen by Divine Justice in Nicaragua to begin the Judgment of Injustice on earth. Do not be afraid, my beloved brothers and sisters; and be sure, very sure and ever more sure that very soon we will have our definitive Triumph in Nicaragua, with which the fuse of the "Proletarian Explosion" against the Imperialists of the Earth will be lit.
Sincerely your Brother.
Headquarters of the Army In Defense of the National Sovereignty of Nicaragua.
El Chipotón, Las Segovias, Nicaragua, C.A.
February 15th 1931
A Patriotic Nation and Freedom
And General Sandino signs it.
If you pay close attention, it's as if he was watching what's happening in the world now, but suddenly signs appear, when it already seemed that the World was being destroyed, signs appear in the search for Peace, and the Leaders of the most powerful Countries meet and communicate, exchanging views: Putin, from Russia, with Trump, from the United States, and President Xi Jinping, from China, supporting dialogue, supporting the search for Peace.
That is to say, that has been the great threat for humanity at the moment, and that is what we have to count on, that these tensions which have been created, such that it was already being said that a Third World War was coming with atomic weapons, suddenly these signals appear, and the only ones who are locked in continuing war are the Europeans.
At least what is seen very clearly from the Dialogues that are taking place, the Meetings that are being held, at the same time seeking a solution to the problem that has been brought about against the People of Palestine. That is to say, the powers are looking for ways out, solutions are being sought; namely, so that war does not progress, that atomic weapons do not explode. And it is being understood, this is the only way is to talk about the search for Peace, to seek Peace.
And this Message from General Sandino, of "Light and Truth”, is very contemporary, still very current, and I would say that it even explains why our General Sandino fell into the greatest betrayal ever committed in our country. Because he, marking his Principles and his Thought, fought against the most powerful Army in the World.
But they could not defeat him, and they had no choice but to withdraw from Nicaragua; that is, they were defeated by the Army In Defense of National Sovereignty. And that's the moment when he said, with his very deep thought and with every reason, he said, now is the time for Peace, because the Yankee troops have left, there is a President here who says he is ready for peace.
The Yankees left Somoza at the head of the Guard, and Yankee soldiers who were also in charge there; but Somoza himself sent Sandino messages seeking Peace, and seeking to take that decision to work for Peace, which is what explains why he decided to run the risk of death, rather than renounce the principle of seeking Peace. Because the enemy was no longer here, the enemy, the Yankees, who were the ones he was fighting, had already been defeated; there was a President who said he wanted to meet to negotiate a Peace Agreement.
Sandino meditates and said that he is going to come to Managua, and his Comrades tell him no, that is, the Comrades were opposed to him coming to Managua, the other Generals; there they are going to ambush him, they are going to kill him, they told him. But Sandino said, there is no alternative, we have fought for Peace and, well, now there is nothing left but to risk our lives for Peace.
He came to Managua once and the negotiations started, and when he came to Managua, Somoza, the Yankees’ “son of a bitch” of the, went to greet him, hugged him, and they took a picture, there's that picture, and he told him they were Brothers. We are “Brother Freemasons”, was what Somoza told Sandino.
Then he returned to his encampment to explain what was being worked on and what other meetings would be coming, and so there were two meetings, and then I think there was a third meeting.
So, he came to Managua again and in the meantime, that was when the President invited him to dinner, it was like Christ at the Last Supper. He went to dinner, to the Presidency, accompanied by three Generals, General Estrada, General Umanzor, his father too, General Sandino's father.
So, they go to dinner, President Sacasa's daughter was there, and everything was fine, and when they left dinner and came down this Avenue that is now the Avenue Sandino, the one that follows the Avenue Bolivar is the Avenue Sandino, which Somoza had called Avenue Roosevelt.
So when they came down and were close to where the Field of Mars used to be, there was a National Guard checkpoint and they stopped them and made them get them out of the vehicles, with Sandino questioning them, protesting to them.
In that moment there appeared the daughter of President Sacasa who was also leaving after the dinner, and she went and talked to the National Guard, telling them: But he has just been with my father. What's the matter? Why are they going to put him in jail?
But there was no reason, they took Sandino and murdered him.
That is to say, Sandino was convinced there was no other way but to seek a Peace Agreement. But it is also a lesson that remains for history, that to achieve Peace Agreements you have, of course, to work, you have to do it with a lot of certainty, with a lot of conviction, with a lot of firmness, as we managed to do here the Peace Agreements, with Cardinal Obando as Mediator.
Cardinal Obando was really exceptional for us, as a Priest, as a Bishop, as a Cardinal... so many times he accompanied us in this Square on July 19th. Well, the Cardinal was helping there so that dialogue could take place and agreements could be reached.
In the end, the Agreements were reached, the disarmament of the Contras was achieved and the restoration of Peace was achieved, with a Government that naturally was a Government beholden to the Government of the United States, and for that reason, the governments that passed in the subsequent three periods, tried to demoralize, to wear down the Army, the Police, to deny them resources.
Just as they also tried to demoralize the People, but the People, as we told our People that day, the day after the Elections, on February 26th, I remember then, that, gathered there in Omar Torrijos Square, we told them: Well, it's understandable what happened here in these Elections, because the threat of the Yankees was that they were going to continue the war.
It was already 10 years of war by then, with thousands of dead, I was meeting relatives, mothers of young men doing Military Service, and they asked me to bring their other boy who had just been taken to Military Service.
In other words, people were not really voting for those who served the Yankees, they were voting for Peace, for the lives of their children, and it is understandable that in those conditions people voted at for others at the ballot box.
But we managed to remain with a solid base in Parliament and above all that solid base in our People, the Sandinista People did not give up, did not become demoralized, but gave battle, so that the oligarchs would not steal land from the peasants, that they would not steal the houses from families in houses the Revolution had given them.
A battle that lasted 17 years, when they privatized everything, but in the end the People resumed Government again, and the Army, the Police, began to recover strength, because of course these Institutions are needed; to have Peace, so that the Country can progress, these Institutions are needed to ensure security they are vital.
And today, precisely after we have taken another momentous step, because on the 18th, that is, three days ago today, the Constitutional Reforms were published in the Gazette, which give more strength to the Nicaraguan people, which give more strength to the Programs we are developing, so that the fight against poverty can be carried out more effectively, more efficiently.
We have advanced and we will continue to advance, together with everyone, with the Blue and White Flag of our Patriotic Nation, and Sandino’s Red and Black Flag, which rescued the Blue and White Flag, because our Blue and White Flag had been flying since Independence, but had been sullied by Yankee interventions.
And it was Sandino, with the Red and Black Flag who manages to raise up high the Blue and White Flag, and it was Sandino, leading the way with his Thought, with his Example, with his Words, with his Actions, at the head of the People, with the Sandinista Front, it has been Sandino who has managed to install himself, with his Thought, with his Ideas, with his Forces, with his Spirit, taking upon himself the leadership of the Country, of our Patriotic Nation, and it is that Strength which allowed us to pass that test defeating the coup plotters in 2018. That was an acid test.
And today, now with the new Constitution in force, we have proceeded to comply with what the Law says, with what the Constitution says, following the corresponding procedure, to hand over the Baton of Command to General Julio César Avilés Castillo, Commander-in-Chief of the Nicaraguan Army.
And it is a continuity of Mandate, indeed, but why? Because the work that General Aviles has developed, the dedication, the discipline, the mystique of his bond with the People, of his bond with the Peasants, his bond with the Producers, going from one Department to another, coordinating efforts, protecting productive activity, ensuring security to productive activity, tells us a lot about who such a Person is, a conscious, committed Compañero, with the same firmness as Sandino, with the same firmness as Zeledón.
I do not forget when we were out the Government, we were not in the Government then, you Genreal were in the Army, when Osegueda died; my Chief of Bodyguards was Commissioner Osegueda, Pablito we called him, a guerrilla fighter, he came from the guerrilla, originally from Esteli, he was my Chief of Bodygaurds, and was in good condition, but suddenly he had a heart attack and died.
He lived near where we live, we had him there close at hand, well, and there was the wake in a small, humble house, a decent but humble house, not a palace, we don't have palaces to live in.
Well, at the hour of the wake I went that night to pay my condolences, and to my surprise I found General Avilés arriving at that humble little house to pay his condolences to Commissioner General Osegueda. Why? Because they had been in combat together, in the guerrilla, but the loyalty, the affection for the Compañero who had passed, and for the Family of course, from someone who was active in the Army but had arrived, he arrived there and we met, we greeted each other.
That says a lot about what loyalty is, and we are honored to have our Compañero at the head of the Army, just as we are honored to have all of you in the Army, beloved Brothers and Sisters, beloved Compañeras and Compañeros.
And to conclude, let me greet the Brothers and Sisters who are in this event, and all those who are also here, to all of you our greetings.
And in particular we want to highlight, to greet the Delegation of the Fraternal People of Martí, of Fidel, of Raúl, of Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Delegation of the Heroic Cuban People who continue to suffer from the blockade, but the day will come, as Sandino says in his Letter, that the Blockade will disappear. And we conclude this Act in Tribute to General Sandino, saying:
Sandino Lives On, the Struggle Continues!
Sandino Lives On, the Struggle Continues!
Sandino Lives On, the Struggle Continues!
A Free Nation or Death!
Long live the Nicaraguan Army!
Remarks by Rosario, Co-President of Nicaragua, after the Ceremony of the Inauguration
of General Julio César Avilés Castillo as Head of the Armed Forces of the Army of Nicaragua
February 21st 2025

A very good evening, Compañeras and Compañeros. It is somewhat windy here. but regardless, we can tell you Compañeras and Compañeros, that today, February 21st, we feel more proud than ever to be Sons and Daughters of Sandino, and today, on this February 21st, we inaugurate another period of the leadership of General Julio César Avilés at the head of our Army. We are equally proud to have the Supreme Loyalty of a Soldier of this our Patriotic Nation.
Every time our Comandante makes these historical reviews, it not only touches us all in every way, but gives us all too a breath of Nationhood and Freedom. of a Free Patriotic Nation! The indelible memory of all that we are, the daily experience of all that we are and of our deep identification in terms of Dignity and National Identity.
We are Patriotic Nicaraguans, Sandinistas, because we are Sandino's Children, and for being, also with great pride, part of our Sandinista Popular Revolution.
Just as Sandino rescued the Blue and White Flag of our Nicaragua, the Sandinista National Liberation Front claimed and rescued the Spiritual Strength of our People, embodying it, living it out in practice... Our People have been the Protagonists, Women, Men, of all ages, the Youth of all Times, Protagonists of this Blessed and Always Free Patriotic Nation.
Our Comandante Daniel talked about the great betrayal, the greatest betrayal in our history. But also of how proud we feel today, 91 years after that great betrayal, being Protagonists of the historical vindication of a Constitution insisting on and demanding, as Sandino demanded, a simple span of land, a Constitution vindicating and demanding respect for all this Great and Glorious People of ours, who have the Right to the very best.
And that is why we dedicate ourselves entirely to defending that Right, to building a Future without Poverty, to building a Future of Justice, and to do everything out of Love, because that is God's Precious Gift, Love; but also, it is what Sandino teaches us here.
We are Children of Love, Children of God, and it is up to us to make Love reign everywhere. For Love is Concord. Love is family. Love springs from values. And Love means Love too for the Country that saw us born... National Dignity!
The unworthy, the stateless, those who do not belong to this Blessed Nicaragua suddenly appear from nowhere, and one has to note the utter confusion in the soul of those people incapable of valuing having being born in Nicaragua and being part of a Community of Dignity, a Loving Community, a Community with a Sense of Patriotism.
But after all, they are the ones now who are no longer Nicaraguans, thank God! While our Nicaraguan families are here, full of pride, building the Future we all deserve and which we are going to achieve, because we are going to overcome Poverty and we are going to live in Justice and Well-being, I am sure. For this has been decreed by the Heavenly Father of this Blessed Nicaragua, His Nicaragua, His People.
Thank you Compañeras and Compañeros.
