OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC

REMARKS IN GRATITUDE FOR THE TRIBUTE
TO DR. PAUL OQUIST (RIP)

Thank you very much President,

On behalf of the Government of Nicaragua presided by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, we appreciate the tribute to our brother Dr. Paul Oquist who passed away recently.

Dr. Oquist was a Nicaraguan, son of Sandino and Darío, fighter for the social causes of developing countries, particularly those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

In his intense and successful participation in the UNFCCC, Dr. Oquist was head of the Nicaraguan delegation since 2009, participated in the creation of the Green Climate Fund, advocated for the creation of the GCF Designated

National Authorities, 50-50 between adaptation and mitigation, the 1.5 oC study on climate change, Co-Chair of the GCF Board of Directors, active member of the ALBA Group, LMDC, Bonn Challenge, 20x20 Initiative, among other important representations on behalf of GRULAC.

But, in addition, Dr. Oquist was a man sensitive to the problems of our peoples, humble and tireless worker, a great gentleman, proclaimed for climate justice and common but differentiated responsibilities.

He dreamed of a greener world with more forests, he considered that the best form of resilience to climate change are forests and environmental restoration, for that reason he considered important all forms of revegetation.

Nicaragua, Latin America, the World, the UNFCCC have lost a great human being, who like Bernardita Muller and Martin Khor among brothers, leaves us an important legacy that we are committed to continue.

Thank you very much President
