Nicaraguan government investigates misuse of funds by Chamorro family foundation

PRESS RELEASE

The Ministry of the Interior of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity, in the framework of its functions of control, regulation and monitoring of non-profit organizations, as stated under Law 147, General Law on Non-Profit Legal Persons; Law 977, Law Against Money Laundering, Financing of Terrorism and the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, in its article 37; and Decree No. 15-2018 Regulation of Law 977, in article 13; announces that today, Thursday, 20 May 2021: Cristiana María Chamorro Barrios, citizens ID 001-050254-0027C, representative of the "Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation for Reconciliation and Democracy", Walter Antonio Gánez Silva, citizens ID 001-311066-0007Y, Financial Administrator of the Foundation and Marco Antonio Fletes Casco, citizens ID 001-290479-0048E, General Accountant of the Foundation; have been summoned to the Ministry of the Interior, to answer for inconsistencies detected in the financial reports for the 2015 - 2019 period.

The "Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation for Reconciliation and Democracy", has seriously breached its obligations before the Regulatory Entity and based on the analysis of the Financial Statements for the period 2015 - 2019, clear indications of money laundering were obtained; therefore, the Ministry of the Interior has informed the Office of the Public Prosecutor regarding the corresponding investigation.

The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity, through the Ministry of the Interior, continues to work and reaffirm its Commitment toward Peace and Common Good.
