MOSCOW (Sputnik) - As Nicaragua general elections approach, the United States continually increases the strong pressure it exerts on this Latin American country, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, María Zajárova, declared at a press conference.

"As general elections approach in that State, which are scheduled for 7th November, the powerful wave of external pressure on the legitimate government of President Daniel Ortega increases," said the diplomat.

According to the spokesperson, the objective of this pressure is to destabilize the country in order to oust the Sandinistas, followers of the Sandinista National Liberation Front party, from power.

Zajárova recalled that in November 2018, then the President of the North American country, Donald Trump, approved an executive order declaring the situation in Nicaragua as "an extraordinary threat to national security and US foreign policy."

In December 2018, the White House approved a law on investment conditions in Nicaragua, according to which Washington blocked the financing of that country by international banks and monetary and financial organizations.

The diplomat denounced that the Americans also imposed visa restrictions on Nicaraguan officials, as well as eliminated the temporary protection status for immigrants from that country.

For the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, currently it can only be described as "cynicism" the fact that the "ring of US economic restrictions began to shrink in the middle of a pandemic."

"Efforts, again prescribed in US law, are intensifying to involve NGOs under control in anti-government work," the diplomat added.

According to the spokesperson, the US ambassador in Managua personally deals with the contacts with the controlled NGO´s, by meeting personally with their representatives.

"We wholeheartedly wish the government success, peace and prosperity to the Nicaraguan people, with whom we are united by a strong relationship of friendship and strategic partnership," concluded Zajárova.
