STATEMENT BY THE DELEGATION OF THE GOVERNMENT OF RECONCILIATION AND NATIONAL UNITY OF THE REPUBLIC OF NICARAGUA
AT THE MEETING OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE OAS IN COMMEMORATION
OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST VIOLENCE TOWARD WOMEN

The Nicaraguan Delegation is proud to share with you the important advances made in restoring the Human Rights of Women, which guarantee the fundamental conditions for a dignified life, free of violence, for the Nicaraguan families.
Violence against women constitutes a challenge that in Nicaragua has been assumed with responsibility and commitment, through access to all Rights, for All Women: the Right to Health; to free and quality Primary, Secondary, Technical and University Level Education; the right to housing; to Work, Justice and Security, as well as the full exercise of all Civil and Political Rights, necessary conditions for Human Development and Wellbeing.
The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity has prioritized the effective exercise of these Rights for Women and Girls, from a Model of Equity and Complementarity; Strengthening the Participation of Women in the Consolidation of Peace, both within their families and in the broader community, through public policies, programs and projects aimed at the political, economic, social and cultural empowerment of Women, in the rural areas and in the cities.
In order to eradicate violence against women and to consolidate this model of leadership, Permanent Awareness Campaigns aimed at the Prevention and Attention of Violence, such as the Campaign WOMEN FOR LIFE, WOMEN FOR PEACE AND WELL BEING!, and the Campaign WOMEN, RESPECT, DIGNITY AND RIGHTS!, which includes actions for the promotion, information and dissemination of Womens´ Rights in all spaces.
To date, within the framework of these campaigns, we have reestablished a total of 95 Commissaries for Women, Children and Adolescents, with a mandate to prevent, attend, investigate and provide specialized care to Women and Girls, in order to protect their Lives and Dignity.
In order to strengthen a culture of respect for the lives of women from our Educational System, we have incorporated the subject of RIGHTS AND DIGNITY OF WOMEN, which is taught to the entire educational community, having an important impact in the schools, homes, families and community.
Regarding the legislative framework, we have a Legal Digest in matters of Family, Women, Children, Youth and the Elderly, as well as related to Gender Equality, thus facilitating a legal, orderly, coherent, reliable and safe mechanism that harmonizes the framework Nicaraguan legal system for the consolidation of the Human Rights of Women.
Likewise, the national legislation on criminal matters has been updated to protect the dignified life of women and their families, incorporating a life sentence for those who commit hate crimes, including those related to violence against women.
Law No. 1042, Special Cybercrimes Law, has also been created, aimed at the prevention, investigation, prosecution and punishment of crimes associated with the use of information and communication technologies, including for purposes that threaten the dignity, security and lives of women.
To continue advancing the fight for the elimination of all forms of violence against Women, the Government of Nicaragua has also promoted the empowerment and economic autonomy of women, through socio-productive programs that facilitate access to fair credit, production bonds, technical training and creative platforms, all of which contribute directly to promoting Gender Equity, the eradication of poverty and the construction of a Dignified Life for Women.
Within the framework of our Equity and Complementarity model, the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity has promoted the leading participation of women in the different decision-making spaces in all the Powers of the State, implementing strategies to strengthen leadership and empowerment of women as community leaders, municipal and regional councilors, mayors and vice mayors, congressmen and women, ministers, magistrates and attorneys; which has allowed us to attain the first place in the Americas in terms of gender equity and equality, according to the most recent Global Gender Gap Report, from the World Economic Forum.
Our Government reiterates its unwavering commitment to continue working for Peace, the common good for all and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, which contribute to the reduction of social inequalities and the elimination of all forms of violence.
In the words of our Vice President of the Republic, Comrade Rosario Murillo: “There is no victory, economic, social, or political, that does not include women as essential protagonists. There are no triumphs that do not belong to us, there are no stories that don't apply to us."
