Women in Nicaragua: Power & Protagonism

Nicaragua is a world leader in gender equality. In just 15 years, Nicaragua has closed the gender gap by more than 80%. Today, Nicaragua is the number one country in the world for educational attainment of women and girls, number one for women cabinet ministers, number three in the world for women in parliament, and has made dramatic improvements in women’s health and survival. How has this small Central American nation made such a difference in such a short time? Join us for a combination online class and in-person delegation to find out!

Course Description:

Note - All sessions will include class discussion time and breakout sessions

Opening Session, May 21: The Nicaraguan Government’s Approach of Empowering Women to Help Themselves, with roots in the FSLN Historical Program of 1969. Featuring: Yolanda Áreas Blas, Rural Women's Movement MMC - ATC / CLOC-LVC Women's Articulation, and Becca Renk, Jubilee House Community - Ciudad Sandino.

Session 2, June 4: How Have these Programs Impacted Real Women’s Lives? Beneficiaries of the Zero Usury and Zero Hunger Programs, and a trade unionist will speak about their own experiences.

Session 3, July 9: Women Facing Hybrid Warfare. In a session led by Camila Escalante of Kawsachun News, Nicaraguan women will tell of their experiences with the violence of 2018 and efforts to counteract disinformation since then.

Session 4, September 10: Delegation Report-back. The August travelers will share their impressions and lessons learned with classmates who did not travel.

Session 5, September 24: Celebration of New Friendships with Nicaraguan Women. This session will also be led by delegation travelers, together with Nicaraguan women

Session 6, October 8: Afro-descendant and Indigenous Women in Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast Autonomous Regions. This session will be led by women leaders from these communities.

Cost: The virtual course is free of charge and open to all who wish to learn about and support Nicaraguan women. However, those who are able, are encouraged to donate to our scholarship fund so that more low-income women can travel for the in-person delegation!
