Caricom members clarify that this is not the only case where Almagro speaks on behalf of the organization without the authorization of member countries.
UNITED NATIONS. The Caribbean Community (Caricom) rejects the fact that the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, has recognized Congressman Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela without taking into account the will of the member countries of the organization.
Caricom leaders met on Jan. 24 to discuss the political situation in Venezuela, reported Telesur, after the deputy of the National Assembly in contempt proclaimed himself interim president of the country with the backing of the U.S. government.
"We are writing you this letter to express our disapproval of the position that you, as Secretary General, have adopted in recognizing Juan Guaidó as interim president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. This action on your part, without the authorization of the member countries of the OAS, is considered inappropriate," Caricom questions in the text.
In addition, they clarify that this is not the only case in which Almagro has spoken on behalf of the organization without the authorization of member countries.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has denounced a coup d'état against him, against the background of U.S. interest in the country's oil resources.
