INTERVENTION BY THE DELEGATION OF NICARAGUA
AT THE EXTRAORDINARY SESSION OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE OAS.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2019
Madam President,
The Delegation of Nicaragua appreciates the presentation made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobilization of the Republic of Ecuador, Ambassador José Valencia, and takes due notice of his presentation regarding recent events in his country.
This afternoon we attend this Extraordinary Session of the Permanent Council, convened at the request of the Government of the Republic of Ecuador, and not by the impositions of
a small group of Member States of this Organization, which seek to impose their agendas and decisions on other Sovereign States and whose practices seek to intervene in their internal affairs, in flagrant violation of the nature and purposes of the Charter of the Organization of American States.
We are referring to the palpable existence of a double standard that is used in the Organization of American States in addressing the issues of the inter-American agenda.
Nicaragua is not here to judge why the Ecuadorian Army took to the streets to repress the peaceful demonstrations of the indigenous and peasant population, or why there are numerous deaths and injuries according to national and international media reports.
We are not here to judge why a State of Exception has been decreed and why the Media and Social Networks in the country have been limited or censored.
Nor do we intend to form a Commission of this organization against the sovereign will of the Ecuadorian State, nor impose it for it to make decisions that are solely and exclusively for Ecuadorians.
We take note of the mediation role played by the United Nations System and the Episcopal Conference, and we welcome the initiation of the dialogue between the government of Ecuador and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), and the installation of a Commission with the objective of finding a quick solution to the country´s crisis, through negotiations.
Nicaragua recognizes the Courage of the Original People of Ecuador, and at the same time transmits its most heartfelt Condolences for the Indigenous Brothers and Sisters who lost their Lives in these Battles.
Madam President, Nicaragua joins the message of His Holiness Pope Francis in his Sunday Homily of October 13 this year, in which he states, and I quote, “trust common prayer and join the pain of the dead and wounded, be encouraged to seek social peace, with particular attention to the most vulnerable populations and human rights," end of His Holiness’s quote.
Nicaragua is a country that loves peace and security and respects the principles of International Law and the right of each nation to settle its internal affairs without external interference of any nature.
We express our best wishes so that through dialogue and negotiation, between Ecuadorian brothers and sisters in the framework of their laws and their Constitution, they may find peace and stability for the benefit of the entire Ecuadorian people.
Thank you, Madam President.
