INTERVENTION BY THE NICARAGUAN DELEGATION TO THE ORGANIZATION OF THE AMERICAN STATES AT THE EXTRAORDINARY SESSION OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE OAS, 17 OCTOBER 2019
Madam President,
The encounter of two worlds has constituted an event of profound consequences for the peoples of Our-America.
More than five centuries have passed and yet the original peoples of the Americas continue to demand respect for their identity, their autonomy and their existence as peoples and nations, they continue to demand respect for their customs, traditions and worldviews.
The Nicaraguan Government as a strong advocate of multilateralism advocates for a world in which international laws are respected, in which International and Regional Organizations work together to promote international peace and security, as well as respect and equality between countries and cooperation and commerce between nations that can be promoted in favor of the sustainable development of our peoples.
The current international system is characterized by the existence of a multipolar world, defined by the existence of pockets of global tension in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, where imperial powers distribute areas of influence, using military aggression, seeking to overthrow governments, conducting economic warfare, imposing sanctions and economic and financial boycotts through the manipulation of international financial organizations upon the countries that are victims of these aggressive policies, which resist the geostrategic project of recolonization.
These powers commit crimes of international order, violating the rules of human coexistence and respect that must govern between nations, practices that constitute a serious threat to international peace and security.
We condemn the criminal blockade that is maintained against the Sister Republic of Cuba and all its extraterritorial measures and ramifications, in particular the economic measures that aim to break the Will and Spirit of Freedom and Sovereignty of this sister nation.
We reiterate our unwavering solidarity with the Sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Bolivarian People, and the Constitutional and Legitimate Government of President Nicolás Maduro. We also welcome the efforts of the national government to promote dialogue in favor of the welfare and prosperity of the Bolivarian nation.
Today, more than ever, the defense of sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and the right to self-determination of our peoples come into force. Therefore, the Charter of the Organization establishes that the Organization of American States has no more powers than those expressly conferred by this Charter, none of those provisions authorize it to intervene in matters within the internal jurisdiction of Member States.
Nicaragua does not recognize the right of any country in the world or the Region to intervene in the affairs of the internal jurisdiction of the Nicaraguan State; much less determine what kind of political, socio-economic and cultural development model should exist in each nation.
Nicaragua rejects the application of coercive political and economic measures aimed at trying to break the Will and Spirit of Freedom and Sovereignty of Peoples and Governments of the world, in order to obtain advantages of any nature. We denounce and reject these neo-colonial practices which must disappear, once and for all.
The world we want today is one that respects the fundamental rights of humankind, their dignity and value as human beings, with equal rights between men and women, committed to the task of achieving economic, social and cultural development of their peoples and nations; living in peace, freedom and brotherhood.
A world in which countries respect the norms and principles of international law, the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the OAS, ensuring the peaceful resolution of disputes between States, respecting the personality, sovereignty and independence of each nation and that the obligations emanating from the Treaties and other sources of international law are faithfully fulfilled.
We advocate a new world of solidarity, peace loving, harmony and cooperation among the nations and peoples of the world in which dialogue and negotiation prevail. These are times for the unity of all sister nations of the continent in favor of sustainable development, stability and prosperity of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the construction of that new world, Nicaragua will continue to be an important factor of stability, peace and security in the region and we will continue to uphold the respect for the norms of international law and the right of each nation to settle its internal affairs without any interference, and that the sovereignty of Nicaragua is respected among the concert of nations.
Thank you very much Madam President
