MESSAGE ON THE OCCASION OF CELEBRATING CARICOM DAY AT THE UNITED NATIONS
ON MONDAY, JULY 6, 2020, AT 6:00 PM NEW YORK TIME
Thank you very much Sister Ambassador,
1. Brother Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, receive the fraternal greetings of our Commander Daniel Ortega Saavedra, President of the Republic of Nicaragua and of our Vice President, Comrade Rosario Murillo, our congratulations on your newly assumed CARICOM Chairmanship.
2. Allow me also to express our warm congratulations on this special day to H.E. Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados for her recent exemplary presidency of this important group.
3. Nicaragua is a Caribbean country, according to our Geography and Constitution. We share strong bonds of friendship, brotherhood and cooperation with the Greater Caribbean and throughout CARICOM and we are sure that we will always work in genuine Unity for the benefit of all Caribbean peoples, facing and overcoming the different crises and pandemics that afflict us.
4. Peace and sustainable development are of vital importance for our subregion. CARICOM Member States play a very important role in United Nations and they have a strong voice as we address issues such as the protection and preservation of our Oceans, Climate Change, Health, Disarmament, the defense of Sovereignty and International Law, among others, and now more than ever, having your worthy country and yourself as a Non-Permanent Member of the Security Council.
5. We also work together in the Association of Caribbean States, the largest grouping of Member States at the subregional level, an organization committed to Solidarity and Regional Cooperation and capable of addressing the pressing challenges facing the Region.
6. We reiterate on this day of joy, with much love and affection, the historical ties of brotherhood and identity shared by all our Caribbean countries.
7. Nicaragua always has our CARICOM sisters and brothers in mind, as we continue on our unwavering quest to achieve a better world. You can count on the collaboration and Solidarity of the Government and People of Nicaragua as we joyfully celebrate this great CARICOM Day with you.
