Remarks during a debate on Nicaragua held by the Rochester Committee on Latin America

Tonight the debate is about the recent violence in Nicaragua.  I’ll make this point at the beginning:  What happened in Nicaragua was a coup attempt.  The coup attempt was carefully planned by the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy and the Nicaraguan right wing.  Their goal was to overthrow the legal government of Nicaragua, and they failed.

Intervención durante un debate sobre Nicaragua convocado por el Comité de Rochester por América Latina

El debate de esta noche trata sobre la violencia reciente en Nicaragua. Desde el inicio, hare claro este punto: lo que sucedió en Nicaragua fue un intento de golpe. Este intento fue planificado con mucho cuidado por el Fondo Nacional para Democracia de Estados Unidos (NED en Ingles) y por la derecha nicaragüense. Su meta era derrocar al gobierno legal de Nicaragua y han fracasado.
